Mites are microscopic organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye, related to spiders. They grow in warm and wet environments. Mites can be found in many homes, eating dead skin cells and forming real colonies in textile fibers exposed to dust (mattresses, bedding, carpets, furniture, fabrics). Between 100 000 and 10 million mites can be found only in bed sheets. Dead mites and their faecal material is mixed with dust and are easily air-borne.
Mites are the second major cause of allergies, after pollen. Inhaling them causes symptoms of allergies: horse breathing, sneezing, eye irritation, running nose. Prolonged exposure to these allergens can lead to chronic diseases, and even asthma.
